Shawnee's Foster named Player of the Year

By TOM RIMBACK, Burlington County Times

It didn't take long for Kristina Foster to be noticed among the 100 or so players that showed up for preseason field hockey practice in the fall of 2002. She wasn't very tall, and still isn't. She wasn't very strong, even for a freshman. What she was was fast — very fast.
Field hockey coaches love speed, and Shawnee High School coach Heather Xenakis was no exception. Xenakis, who was in her first year as coach, saw Foster's speed first. When Foster showed stick skills and determination to match, Xenakis knew she had a player that she could lean on for four years.
“Kristina has dynamic footwork and stick skills,” Xenakis said. “She's very tough to beat 1-on-1. She controls field of play vocally and, with her four years of varsity experience, was a leader that commanded respect.”
Foster scored a career-high 12 goals this fall (30 for her career) in leading the Renegades to the Central Jersey Group 4 title. This year more than ever, she played in the midfield to spread her talent for getting players involved from goal line to goal line. Always an offensive threat, Foster became a fierce defender and a skilled distributor this fall as well. Few players in the state are as well-rounded.
After starting for four seasons with one of the state's premier field hockey programs, Foster hopes to duplicate that feat with one of the country's best collegiate programs. Foster will continue her athletic career at the University of Maryland, the newly crowned national champion.

New Egypt's Nicholson named Coach of the Year

By TOM RIMBACK, Burlington County Times

Deciding on the Burlington County Times Field Hockey Coach of the Year is one of the toughest chores each fall. This year we saw three teams win Central Jersey Titles, four teams win division titles, one team make the playoffs for the first time in a decade and another team start the season with 16 consecutive wins.
We also saw the New Egypt Warriors win the NJSIAA Group 1 championship. A remarkable feat for any team in any year, when you consider that the Warriors were only in their fifth varsity season, coach Patti Nicholson's accomplishment is that much more impressive.
“When I started, my goal was to find players who wanted to play field hockey,” Nicholson said.
Nicholson started the New Egypt program when the middle school first opened with sixth-graders. As each new class populated the middle school and eventually the high school, Nicholson and her players moved along with school.
Nicholson found players who wanted to play field hockey by building an expectation of winning. The Warriors players have exceeded that expectation.
In five varsity seasons, the Warriors have won four consecutive Burlington County League Freedom Division titles, they finished second by a half-game in their inaugural season. New Egypt has won three straight Central Jersey Group 1 titles and appeared in three straight state finals.
Their 2-1 state final win over Pingry, the team that beat them in each of the last two seasons, capped their finest season to date.
